KUNAL BASU is an Indian Writer in English from Kolkata. He was educated in India and the United States. His earlier works are The Opium Clerk (2001), The Miniaturist (2003), and Racists (2006).The first two were set in Asian contexts and the third was set in Victorian era Africa. His novels are set in special historical contexts and much research has gone into them. He teaches at Oxford University (Business School).His novels can be categorised as historical fiction.

The Yellow Emperor's Cure (2011) is set in the historical background of Boxer Rebellion in China. A Portuguese surgeon Antonio Maria reaches China in search of a cure for syphilis as his father was afflicted with the disease. He meets Fumi and accepts her as the teacher. He starts to question his western beliefs under her influence. As their lessons advance he becomes possessed by her. The mystery of the teacher surmounts the mystery of syphilis.
