Facing Examinations: Practical tips for students

Students should identify and develop their own methods of study. Identify whether you are a visual learner, auditory learner, something else, or all of these.  Your studies should be organized accordingly.

Identify your attention span.  How long can you concentrate on a subject.  If you are forcing yourself to sit and study longer, you are simply wasting your time.

Go for group study only if such an approach is beneficial for you.  This method is not meant for all.

Discover your most productive time for study and do not waste that time for any other purpose.  Studying in the morning is generally advised but that may not be a good advice for everyone.

Choose a place that is conducive to study.  Avoid places with possible distractions like TV or other entertainments.

Take breaks and entertain yourself.
Do not worry too much about the results.  But take the results of previous examinations seriously.  If some subjects require special attention, act accordingly.

Allot more time for subjects that are difficult for you.

Repeated study is more effective in keeping the facts in your memory.

Take short notes while you study and use them to review what you studied.

Go through previous question papers to acquaint yourself with the examination.

Take a model examination yourself using such a question paper.  This will give you an idea about timing, your strengths and weaknesses.

Take nutritious food at regular intervals.

Do moderate physical exercise.

Be realistic about your abilities and aims.

Some amount of alertness is good during the examination weeks.  But it should not lead to anxiety.

Parents and elders should play a creative role by encouraging students and giving them a good ambience for study.
